Initially, this idea came from an expression I have heard while working with orthopedists in context to pelvic fracture in geriatric populations- “born through the pelvis die through the pelvis.” I often use snakes in my artwork as a metaphor for life and processing. The fluidity in the way a snake moves and even breathes appears to be infused with life. The snake is like an intestine, with a beginning and an end, where a transformative process occurs. It is the Alpha and Omega. The snake is juxtaposed against bone as it frequently associated with death. I chose to depict the female pelvis viewed from beneath – from with which life passes. The snake becomes the phallus renewing the cycle of conception, life and death.
